It’s National Gum Care Month!
Signs of Gum Disease
There are different forms of gum disease, including gingivitis and periodontitis. In the early stages, gingivitis is reversible, but once it turns into periodontitis, it’s considered incurable. That is why early detection and treatment are essential. If you experience any of the following symptoms, it’s time to schedule a periodontal screening:
- Tender or swollen gums
- Gums prone to bleeding
- Separating or loose adult teeth
- Gum tissue pulling away from your teeth
- Persistent bad taste in your mouth
Tips For Maintaining Healthy Gums
If you don’t want to deal with gum disease, taking care of your gums is not that difficult. Here are some basic steps anyone can take to keep their gums healthy and disease free:
- Always Flossing: When there’s less plaque and debris between your teeth, there’s a lower chance of you developing an infection. Proper flossing that gets under the teeth helps to remove plaque wedged along the gumline.
- Brushing Your Teeth: At a minimum, everyone needs to brush their teeth twice a day for two minutes each time with a fluoride toothpaste. Brushing should also be directed toward the gums to help fight bacteria and keep the whole mouth healthy.
- Rinsing with Mouthwash: Therapeutic mouthwash can be bought over the counter and is a great tool for fighting gum disease. You have many options for mouthwash, so look for a product that fights gingivitis and plaque and is approved by the American Dental Association.
- Not Using Tobacco of Any Kind: Smoking and chewing tobacco are linked to a variety of health problems, but one of the less talked about issues is that tobacco use is known to weaken the immune system. In addition to reducing your risk for cancer, refusing to smoke gives you a better chance at fending off gum disease. E-cigarettes aren’t a safe alternative, either, as research shows similar drops in immune response after vaping.
- Getting Regular Checkups: Periodontal screenings are key to understanding gum health. If we detect any issues, we will be able to recommend the right treatment plan to restore your oral health.
One final tip: Schedule regular visits with Consultants in Dental Aesthetics! When you see us for routine care, we get a better understanding of your dental and overall health, and we will perform regular cleanings to counteract damaging tartar buildup.
