What Is a Dental Implant?

The Benefits of Dental Implants

The Implant Placement & Restoration Process

IMPLANT PLACEMENT

HEALING (OSSEOINTEGRATION)

It will take about 1-2 weeks to heal and recover from your initial surgery. However, it takes up to 3-6 months or longer for your implant to fully heal and integrate with your jaw tissue in the process known as osseointegration. You will come into our office a few times during this time for checkups to ensure your recovery is on track.

BUILDING YOUR CEREC RESTORATION

During your follow-up appointments while you heal, the dental implant restoration process will begin. One of our doctors will take scans of your mouth and your implant and upload them into our CEREC machine to design the dental crown that will be attached to your implant at your last appointment.

FINAL IMPLANT RESTORATION APPOINTMENT

Once your restoration is done and your mouth is fully healed, you will have an abutment placed onto your dental implant, and then the final restoration will be permanently attached to the implant. After your CEREC dental crown is placed, you’ll be sent home to enjoy your new smile.

Have Questions About Dental Implants?

What is the average cost of dental implants?

The cost of dental implants can vary depending on several factors, including the number of implants needed, the complexity of the case, and the location of the dental practice. On average, the cost of a single dental implant can range from $3,000 to $5,000. However, it’s important to keep in mind that this is just an estimate, and the actual cost may vary. To get an accurate cost estimate for your specific case, it’s best to schedule a consultation with a dental implant specialist who can evaluate your individual needs and provide you with a personalized treatment plan.

How long do dental implants last?

Dental implants are designed to be a long-term solution for missing teeth. With proper care and maintenance, dental implants can last a lifetime. The implant itself is made of a biocompatible material, usually titanium, which fuses with the jawbone to create a strong and durable foundation for the replacement tooth. The crown or prosthetic tooth attached to the implant is typically made of high-quality materials that are resistant to wear and tear. However, it’s important to note that the longevity of dental implants also depends on factors such as oral hygiene practices, overall health, and lifestyle habits. Regular dental check-ups and proper oral care at home can help ensure the longevity of your dental implants.

Will dental implants lift my face?

While dental implants are primarily used to replace missing teeth and restore oral function, they can also have aesthetic benefits. When teeth are lost, the jawbone may start to deteriorate over time, leading to a sunken or aged appearance. Dental implants can help prevent this bone loss and maintain the natural shape of your face. By replacing missing teeth with dental implants, you can restore the support structure of your face, which can have a positive impact on your overall facial aesthetics. Additionally, dental implants provide stability and support for the surrounding teeth, preventing them from shifting or becoming misaligned, which can also contribute to a more youthful appearance.

How long is the recovery time after getting implants?

The recovery time after getting dental implants can vary quite a bit depending on the individual case. Generally speaking, for a single dental implant, the recovery time is usually only a few days. Many patients are able to return to work and normal activities within 1-3 days after getting an implant placed. The area may be tender and mildly swollen for a short time, but major discomfort is rare.

For multiple implants, such as when a full arch of teeth is being replaced, the recovery time is longer. Placing 4-6 implants at once will require around 4-6 weeks for the implants to heal and integrate with the bone before artificial teeth can be attached. During this period, the gums also need time to mend after the surgery. Patients will need to stick to soft foods and avoid very hard chewing or biting during initial healing.

The recovery time also depends on if bone grafting is required before the implants can be placed. If extra procedures are needed to build up the jawbone first, an additional 2-3 months of healing may be necessary. Therefore recovery could extend to 6-8 weeks or longer when multiple implants or grafts are involved. Patience is required when allowing the implants to properly fuse with the jawbone before replacing teeth. But afterwards, dental implants are intended to last for many years once fully recovered from the initial surgery.
