It’s All Connected
As Dr. Landry and Mr. Turner discuss, your health affects your ability to lead, even the things you may not think about, like the quality of sleep you get each night. Dr. Landry explains that the effects of not sleeping for more than 24 hours are similar to having a blood alcohol level of 0.08%. That’s considered legally drunk. And since as much as 90% of adults with sleep apnea continue to go undiagnosed, that’s a whole lot of potentially “drunk” people walking around, driving, conducting business, and providing critical services.
Dr. Landry goes on to explain that sleep apnea risk factors are simple to identify. There’s even an acronym to help people remember: STOP BANG — Snoring, Tiredness, Obstruction, high blood Pressure, elevated BMI, Age (over 50), Neck size, and Gender. He also shares the connection between teeth grinding and sleep apnea, which is one way dentists can tell if a person is at high risk for the condition.
Sleep is not the only thing standing in the way of your leadership potential, according to Dr. Landry. Your smile has a profound influence on how others perceive you and how confident you are in yourself. Many people believe it’s not important to have a nice smile unless you’re a celebrity or a public figure, but Dr. Landry quickly dispels that myth. Your smile affects the way you carry yourself and present yourself out in the world. A damaged smile can keep you from enjoying life, making friends, and reaching your full potential. He understands, because he’s been there himself.
