Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between a regular cleaning and a periodontal cleaning?

Regular dental cleanings focus on removing plaque and tartar on the teeth while flossing and polishing each tooth. We recommend patients to schedule an appointment every 6 months for a regular cleaning to keep your teeth and gums healthy and bright.

Periodontal maintenance is a deeper form of cleaning reserved for patients with a history of gum disease. This treatment targets the spaces between the teeth and gums where plaque and tartar form. Periodontal cleanings are an intensive, essential process to restore and maintain gum and bone health. When hygienists remove the bacteria from your mouth, it can begin to repopulate as frequently as 12 weeks, which is why many periodontal patients are scheduled to return for a cleaning every 3 months.

Is fluoride safe?

Yes! Fluoride is a naturally occurring mineral that helps build strong teeth and prevent cavities. Fluoride treatments may take the form of a solution, gel, foam, or varnish. We use a varnish treatment at CDA to strengthen the enamel of the teeth, making them less vulnerable to bacteria and cavities for life. Fluoride treatments can reduce the risk of cavities, bacteria growth, and tooth pain all while preventing gum disease and the premature tooth loss.

Are x-rays safe?

The average American actually receives more radiation by sitting in front of the family television than from routine x-rays taken at the dental office. Dental x-rays and images are taken to diagnose underlying problems in your teeth and jaw bones, allowing us to catch early issues quickly before they grow and become a significant problem. We will capture images during necessary intervals and for new patients so we have a baseline for your dental health.

Why is flossing so important?

Daily flossing is essential for healthy teeth and gums. Brushing alone reaches only 3 out of 5 tooth surfaces. The surfaces between the teeth that brushing can't reach are areas where cavities and periodontal disease begin to form most frequently. Our team’s favorite floss to use is Cocofloss! With fun colors and fruity flavors, Cocofloss is a great way to fall in love with flossing. Be sure to pick some up at your next appointment!

Will my insurance cover everything?

Our Insurance Benefits Specialist is happy to provide a complimentary benefits verification to see if your treatment is covered by insurance. Your insurance provider determines the plan benefits that you are eligible for and currently have available. While dental insurance offers assistance, it shouldn’t dictate what treatment you need. If your insurance does not cover your treatment, our team is happy to discuss third-party payment plans to assist in financing your dental care.
