How To Handle A Dental Emergency
Not Sure If It’s an Emergency?
Some issues can wait. Others need immediate attention. If you’re in serious pain, see swelling, or have a tooth that’s cracked, loose, or knocked out, it’s important to call our Spring, TX dental office as soon as possible. We offer same-day appointments for urgent needs and can guide you.
Here are some of the most common dental emergencies we treat and how to handle them safely.
Severe Toothache or Swelling
Pain that doesn’t go away is your body’s way of signaling that something’s wrong, such as an infection, abscess, or deep cavity. Take over-the-counter, anti-inflammatory medication, rinse gently with warm salt water, and avoid chewing on the affected side. Then call us immediately, especially if you also notice swelling or a pimple-like bump near the tooth.
Chipped, Cracked, or Broken Tooth
Not all cracks are visible, but they can be painful or sensitive to temperature. If you break a tooth, rinse your mouth with water, apply a cold compress to reduce swelling, and bring any broken pieces with you to your appointment. Quick care can prevent infection and may save the tooth.
Knocked-Out Tooth
Timing is critical here. If possible, gently rinse the tooth and try to place it back in the socket. If that’s not possible, store it in a container of milk or your saliva and get to our office within 30 minutes. The sooner we see you, the better the chance of saving the tooth.
Lost Filling, Crown, or Bridge
A lost restoration might not be painful at first, but it leaves your tooth exposed and vulnerable. Avoid sticky or hard foods, keep the area clean, and call us to have it repaired or replaced before damage sets in.
Bleeding or Signs of Infection
Uncontrolled bleeding or symptoms of infection—like severe pain, swelling, fever, or discoloration—should never be ignored. Infections can spread quickly, so getting treatment right away is important.
