Treatment starts with an honest look at what’s actually happening in your mouth. Pocket depths get measured. We check for bleeding and inflammation, pull in digital imaging when we need to see below the gumline. What we find shapes the plan; no two patients get quite the same one. Active gum disease usually means scaling and root planing first, clearing out plaque and tartar above and below the gumline. Pockets four millimeters or deeper, or spots with real inflammation and bleeding, often need laser therapy on top of that. It knocks down bacteria in places a toothbrush can’t reach and speeds up healing.

Long-Term Care for Healthy Gums

None of this is a one-and-done fix. Most patients come back every three to four months for maintenance. That’s how we catch small changes before they turn into bigger problems. You’ll see the same hygienist each time too, someone who actually knows your history instead of starting over from a chart every visit. Between the imaging, the charting, and just talking things through, you should always know where things stand. A lot of patients don’t realize how far gum disease has progressed until it’s pointed out to them, since early stages rarely hurt. That’s part of why the maintenance schedule matters as much as the initial treatment does. Skipping visits, even when your gums feel fine, is usually how things quietly get worse again.
